Many view Moses as an impressive leader from the Bible. His leadership qualities can serve as inspiration in our own lives.
One example would be how he delegated some of his judging responsibilities to others in order to free up more time for his other leadership roles.
Another example was his stand for God’s righteousness and against sinfulness among his people.
1. He was a man of integrity and character
Integrity and character are among the most essential qualities for a leader, something Moses was known for possessing abundantly.
Moses was known for his honesty and integrity, which enabled him to make decisions that benefitted those he led. He showed kindness towards those in trouble or need and took on tough tasks when required by God; such as when Nadab and Abihu ignored God’s instructions regarding sacrifice offerings – when these two disobeyed, Moses stood up for what was right and helped them provide sacrifices according to what had been given him by the LORD.
Moses displayed caring leadership during their forty years in the wilderness. He understood others’ needs and could forgive those who transgressed the law, interceding for his people through prayer intercessors who often complained and offered intercession on their behalf, showing he cared about them as individuals rather than just projects.
Moses would always remind the Israelites who were angry with him that who really controlled things: God! Any success that they may experience should be given back to him alone and given glory by giving thanks when things went well. Moses had an exceptional ability to give glory only to Him when things went right – an excellent quality for a leader to possess!
2. He was a man of faith
Moses’ faith was key to his leadership success as a leader. When faced with challenging situations, he relied on God for guidance; an excellent example being when his people complained about not having enough water in the desert (Exod 17:2-6); knowing he couldn’t solve this himself, Moses sought divine intervention and called on Him for assistance instead.
Moses understood who was really in charge and never took credit for what had been accomplished under his leadership. This serves as a great lesson to all leaders as it reminds us that success comes solely from God; when we claim credit ourselves we diminish His glory.
Moses demonstrated his faith through his ability to encourage and mentor other leaders. Understanding that his time would soon come to a close, Moses began planning for his successor from day one of his ministry – even seeking advice from Jethro on this issue. Effective leaders need to know what roles are theirs alone to juggle and which ones may be passed off in order to foster empowerment, inclusion and creativity – the Bible provides numerous examples of these decisions made by Moses himself.
3. He was a man of courage
Many consider Moses a hero, but we should also consider his courage. As shown throughout Scripture, Moses displayed courageous leadership as he led Israel from slavery to independence.
As soon as Moses was given the task of leading, he initially had many reservations. He even tried coming up with excuses so as not to have to do it (Exodus 3:11-12). Yet Moses knew God could send His message through someone else if necessary (Exodus 4:10) – knowing full well he wasn’t the best orator but trusting in His ability to relay that message effectively to Israel.
Moses was so inspiring because of his courage in asking God what the right course of action should be when faced with difficult situations. We should all do the same because without asking Him for guidance we may miss our mark and do things that won’t serve the greater good.
Moses was also renowned for his vision. He could see what was happening and where Israel stood on their journey, knowing they would one day arrive at their promised land.
4. He was a man of vision
As a leader of an organization or team, you likely have a vision for where it wants to go. Moses demonstrated this beautifully: his mission was clear – God wanted something accomplished through him! That should be our goal as leaders!
Humility is one of the cornerstones of leadership. Moses epitomizes this trait throughout Exodus by showing himself humble before God and open to feedback from others. Additionally, he displays remarkable empathy when dealing with suffering around him.
He was a man of heroism as well, protecting those vulnerable against those who seek to take advantage of them and even willing to lay his life down for his people. Unfortunately, there comes a point when God must intervene and remove obstacles which get in the way of leading and this was what happened with Moses.
As when Moses is informed he won’t be permitted to enter the Promised Land, instead of lamenting and quitting, he stays focused on his mission and doing what God wants him to do – a true sign of leadership! Rather, this type of perseverance demonstrates why someone could lead 2.5 million people for 40 years across a desert!
